La Marie Rose — 6A
Bas-Cuvier, Fontainebleau
Ouvert par René Ferlet en 1946

Every climber knows La Marie Rose.

For many, it is a first 6A. A legendary slab climbed by generations.

But behind this line lies much more than a grade.

In 1946, René Ferlet, one of the strongest post-war climbers and a close companion of Pierre Allain, made the first ascent at Bas-Cuvier.

As shoes and techniques evolved, the grades were reassessed. La Marie Rose eventually became recognised as Fontainebleau's first 6A.

Its name also tells a more personal story.

According to local lore, Ferlet named the problem after Marie-Rose, the woman he loved at the time.

When I spoke with Hélène Le Menestrel, she told me that the same Marie-Rose also played a part in bringing her and her future husband together.

A meeting that would later lead to the birth of Marc and Antoine Le Menestrel, two legends of climbing history !

Behind this 6A lie several love stories, several generations of climbers, and a piece of Fontainebleau history.

MORE THAN A PRODUCT.

A piece of Fontainebleau.

Fontainebleau Boulder is an independent photography and storytelling project dedicated to documenting the boulders, history and climbing culture of Fontainebleau.

Every image begins the same way: a walk through the forest, a camera in hand, and the desire to preserve the places that have inspired generations of climbers.

Each product in the BLEAU ARCHIVE collection features an original photograph of a specific boulder and becomes part of a growing archive dedicated to the world's most iconic bouldering destination.

Whether displayed on a wall or worn every day, it is a way to carry a small piece of Fontainebleau with you.

THE STORY BEHIND THE STONE

Every climber remembers a boulder.

The first one that truly mattered.
The project that took months.
The line shared with friends.
The problem discovered on a cold winter morning.

Some boulders become part of climbing history.

Others become part of our own story.

The BLEAU ARCHIVE collection exists to preserve both.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Fontainebleau Boulder is a personal project created by a climber and amateur photographer who simply loves Fontainebleau and wants to share its stories.

Every photograph, design, archive entry and product is created independently, one boulder at a time.

By purchasing a product, you are supporting the continuation of this archive and helping preserve a unique piece of climbing culture.

SMALL-BATCH & INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION

All products are printed on demand to avoid unnecessary waste and overproduction.

Because this is a small independent project rather than a mass-market brand, production and shipping can sometimes take a little longer than expected.

Thank you for your patience.

Please note that returns are only accepted in the case of a manufacturing defect, damaged product or delivery issue.

CARE FOR BLEAU

Fontainebleau exists because generations of climbers, walkers, volunteers and local organisations have cared for it.

50% of the project's profits is committed to supporting local initiatives that help protect, maintain and improve Fontainebleau and its climbing environment.

When you purchase a Fontainebleau Boulder product, you help support the archive and contribute to the future of the place that inspired it.

Share the passion. Care for the place.
